Gaming Industry Losing Ground to International Competition

4 February 2010

Although UK is the third largest producer of computers and games, stiff competition is being witnessed in this industry from Canada and France. The industry in the UK is weighed down with many problems which are restricting growth here.

Many well known personalities from the industry met recently at the Westminster eForum in London to discuss the problems of the industry and the government intervention required to boost fortunes here. The participants underlined the importance of the games industry to the economy which contributes more than the film industry. A call was made for the provision of tax credits to gaming businesses on the lines of the practice followed in Canada and France.

However, the fact that the latest games are heavily internet dependent and require hg speed broadband is also a huge factor contributing to the losses here. As of now the connection speeds in the UK are not adequate. The government plan for establishing 2Mb broadband speed by 2012 is neither ambitious nor enough according to Keith Ramsdale, Electronic Arts’ vice-president for Northern Europe.

It seems that unless these problems are resolved quickly, the UK games industry will lose to international competition. UK’s economy will suffer if this indeed comes to pass.

For information on your ISP and corresponding broadband speed, try using the broadband check from Broadband Genie to get a snapshot of your current download and upload speeds, it also has an independent guide to the broadband packages suitable for gamers.
